How to choose an ATV, UTV, or SxS trailer in 6 steps

Choosing the right trailer for your off-road vehicle doesn’t have to be complicated. We’ve created a 6-step checklist to help you streamline the process and ensure you have everything covered when selecting your new trailer.

1. Determine your needs and budget.

Start by clarifying your needs with a few key questions:

  • Are you hauling a single vehicle, or do you want space for more in the future?
  • Will you need extra room for gear or potential modifications like lift kits to your ATV or UTV?
  • What’s your budget for this purchase? We offer financing options to make it easier to get the trailer you need when you need it.

2. Confirm size and weight capacity.

Getting the size and weight capacity right is essential. This step ensures your trailer comfortably fits your vehicle and gear and can safely handle the weight.

Trailer size considerations

An ATV typically requires about 40 square feet of space, while a UTV may need closer to 72 square feet. To ensure a comfortable fit, we recommend choosing a trailer slightly larger than your vehicle’s dimensions—adding 1-2 feet to both the length and width. This extra space makes it easier to load and secure your vehicle, accommodates additional supplies, and allows room for future modifications. At the same time, keep the trailer compact enough to fit in your garage, shed, or designated storage space.

Trailer weight considerations

For a single ATV or UTV, a single-axle trailer typically provides sufficient support, while hauling multiple vehicles calls for a dual-axle (tandem) trailer. When choosing a trailer, pay close attention to its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and avoid confusing it with the tongue hitch weight capacity—this is a common mistake. Ensure the trailer’s tires are rated to handle your load and stay well within their weight limits for safety. Additionally, check the type of brakes the trailer uses to understand how they integrate with your overall setup.

3. Decide on open or enclosed.

Both open and enclosed trailers work well for hauling recreational vehicles, so consider the advantages of each to decide which will work best for you.

Open ATV/UTV/SxS trailers

Flatbed trailers are a great option for hauling off-road vehicles. These trailers are lighter than enclosed trailers, more affordable, easier to maneuver, and don’t require much maintenance. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly, low-maintenance option, an open trailer may be your best bet.

Enclosed ATV/UTV/SxS trailers

Enclosed trailers offer greater protection from weather and theft. They keep your vehicle safe from the elements, serve as long-term storage, and allow you to transport extra equipment. If you need a flexible option for your off-road adventures, consider an enclosed trailer.

4. Select your material.

The best trailers are built with either steel or aluminum. Some trailers have steel frames and aluminum skin, bringing together the strengths of both kinds of metal.

Steel trailers

Steel trailers are ideal for when you need to carry heavier loads, need a more durable trailer with a longer lifespan, or want to minimize your upfront costs.

Aluminum trailers

Aluminum trailers are perfect for lighter loads, fuel efficiency, better towing capacity, lower maintenance needs and costs, and higher resale value. They also tend to have more modern, advanced features.

Steel frame trailers with aluminum skin

To combine the best of both worlds, these trailers have a steel frame for extra strength and aluminum skin that keeps the overall trailer light and resistant to rust and corrosion.

Our team is always here to help if you have any questions about which material would provide the features and performance you’re looking for!

5. Choose your loading and unloading features.

There are a variety of innovative trailer features available to make loading and unloading your off-road vehicle much easier.

Non-slip ramps

If you know you could be loading your off-road vehicle on your trailer in severe weather conditions like snow or mud, consider purchasing a non-slip ramp. These ramps are designed to provide maximum traction and stability as you load or unload. Depending on the design, they can even help shed dirt and debris as the vehicle comes up the ramp.

Drop-down (fold-down) ramps

Drop-down ramps are a popular option, offering convenience and simplicity. They fold down to the ground as you’re loading or unloading your ATV or UTV, and are secured in an upright position when not in use. The Mission 7x14 All Aluminum Utility Trailer features a drop-down ramp.

Folding ramps

Folding ramps are detachable, portable, and can be used with multiple trucks or trailers–by contrast, drop-down ramps are permanently attached to a single trailer. Folding ramps are easy to carry or store when you’re not using them, typically take up less space than drop-down ramps, and lighten the trailer’s load since they’re removable.

Dual runner ramps

Dual runner ramps have two pieces, for the tires on each side of your off-road vehicles. These ramps are convenient, portable, and flexible—you can adjust how far apart they are for different wheel spacings.

Side load ramps

Side load ramps are a broad category that includes examples of all the other kinds of ramps (including dual runner, non-slip, etc.). While side load ramps vary significantly, all of them involve loading the vehicle from the side instead of the back. Some trailers feature a built-in side load ramp. Many other trailers are compatible with portable side load ramps. The side-loading feature is ideal for situations where you won’t be able to load your vehicle on your trailer from behind.

Tilt decks (tilt beds)

With a tilt deck trailer, no ramps are needed. Using gravity or a hydraulic system, the tilt deck is lowered to the ground, allowing you to easily and safely drive your off-road vehicle onto the trailer. You won’t have to worry about purchasing, maintaining, or storing a ramp. Here’s a great tilt deck option for towing off-road vehicles: the Hawke 7x20 14k and 16k Full Power Tilt trailer

6. Ensure hitch compatibility.

There are many options for your trailer’s hitch, and some have a much higher weight capacity than others. It’s critical to choose a hitch that safely accommodates the weight of the items you’ll be transporting. Our staff is experienced and ready to help you find just the right hitch for your towing needs. Check out our thorough guide for choosing the best trailer hitch.
